Ontario socialism

What do you think that this is a picture of? Why would all these people be patiently queueing in a -20c and windy day? What could possibly be at the end of such a queue?

Welcome to the Liquor Liscencing Board of Ontario, basically your only option if you want a drop of the strong stuff to take home. When I got inside half the shelves were empty because it was Superbowl Sunday. It's a strange form of socialism they have here, you pay full price for prescription drugs but can only buy a bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc from a bonded government establishment.

so does all booze need
to be bought from a government store?

You say "basically your only option"; that implies there is another (maybe less easy) option. Home brewing? What do they make of that scenario? Or is it something entirely different?

You can buy beer from The Beer Store, which is great. There's a good selection and all the beer is kept cold in a room at the back. Unfortunately there's none whithin walking distance of us.

Ontario wine can be bought at shops that sell only Ontario wine. What, you haven't heard of Ontario wine? Exactly.

Home brewing is allowed but we don't have the space and I rather prefer my beer made by someone with several hundred years of German/Belgian tradition behind them.

Sadly all that is left is to go the pub, which as I'm sure you can imagine is quite a hardship!
